An evening of Ecstatic Dance, Cacao, Sufi Breathwork and Whirling.

The Turning is a structured session of breath and movement. It offers time to step out of your usual routine and enter a focused physical practice in the company of others.

We begin in circle, with cacao available for those who would like it. The first session is Sufi breathwork. This is not separate from the whirling but a direct preparation for it. The breathwork builds rhythm, steadiness and internal focus. It supports balance, stamina and orientation in space, all of which are essential when turning. The patterns we practise help regulate the nervous system and create a stable centre from which to whirl.

Whirling, rooted in the Sufi tradition, is a practice of conscious turning. In the Mevlevi lineage it is a disciplined physical meditation, where the body rotates while attention remains anchored. One hand traditionally turns upward, one downward, symbolising the meeting of heaven and earth. At its core, the practice trains presence within motion. It develops axis, surrender to momentum and the ability to remain aware while the world appears to move around you.

You will be introduced to clear foundational technique, including how to find your axis, how to use the gaze and how to enter and exit safely. The session gradually builds into sustained turning. No previous experience is necessary. It is led by Anna Ayyildiz with live percussion from Tolga Tres, supporting rhythm and continuity.

The evening concludes with an ecstatic dance set guided by Echo Giesel Widmer. This is a dedicated space to move freely and integrate what has been explored through breath and turning. There is no choreography and no expectation, only music and movement.
